Rising to a seating position, Beth grabbed her phone from atop her bed and called Rowan. His line sounded distant and almost like a dial-up phone, and that led her to chuckle. She must’ve still been chuckling when he picked up because he asked, “Beth? What’s funny?”

The familiarity of his voice hit her—and sent butterflies racing.

She jerked and sat up straight, gripping the edge of the bed. Her reaction to his voice was not what she needed. Time to make this quick. She inhaled a calming breath. “Nothing. It’s just, well, your ringing tone sounded like an old dial-up phone.”

“Ah, that comes with long-distance calls sometimes.” A tease laced his tone. “I’m sorry if my question jolted you. I didn’t mean to sound harsh.”

“I’m not offended. Like I said, it was just funny.”

“How are you? And what happened last night? I had expected your call. You had me worried till dawn.”

“I saw your missed call. I was asleep.” She winced at his chiding—chiding she well deserved. “I’m sorry. I know I’d promised to call you. My mom was sick when I got home, so that took priority. By the time she and Roberto got back, my mind was completely off what had happened earlier.”

“I see. So, he didn’t trail you home.”

“No.”

“Great.” A rushed exhale met her ears. “I was worried. If he contacts you in any way, call me. Don’t text. Like, really call. Okay?”

She tightened her grip on the headboard. Was this the time to draw the line and fix her mistake? “You’re abroad, Rowan. What would you do? I was actually thinking I shouldn’t have texted you last night. No need to bother you when I could’ve called Roberto.”

“So, why did you?”

His soft question whispered over her, disarming her. Her shoulders loosened as she released the pent-up breath she’d been holding. “You’re experienced in gangs. He is not. And, you know stuff about the Striker and his relationships that my brother wouldn’t know. I only recognized the guy as the Striker’s cousin. I couldn’t recall his name though.”

“You still have confidence in me?”

Though sounding innocent, the question was anything but. Meaning, if she still had confidence in him, why did she break up with him. “Yes.” She said the truth. “On some things.”

“I see. So, what if I told you I’m now a Christian? Would that make a difference about us?”

Huh? “No.” It couldn’t. Could it? “We’re old news.”

“According to whom?”

She released the edge of the bed when her fingers dug into the wood. No. She wasn’t doing this. He couldn’t be serious. His sweet talk wouldn’t work. “Rowan, I’m sorry I contacted you in a moment of danger. Since we’ve broken up, I really shouldn’t have. I guess… well, an old habit resurfaced from the time we were together, plus your experience in dealing with gangs. I just—I’m not into if-so-how-then games. I’m glad for you if you’ve truly received Christ, but I would still stay broken up with you. Thanks for being there for me yesterday. And thanks for the postcard.
